Parallax Protocol is a science-fiction tabletop role-playing system. It's a tactical, compact, intuitive, modern d20 game with old-school sensibilities.
Parallax Protocol is designed to provide a straightforward, low-lift, d20 gaming experience. Referees should be able to grok the system and make it their own. Players should find the system familiar enough to jump right into. Parallax Protocol supports intuitive mechanics that facilitate simple rulings instead of voluminous rules.
By design, there is no setting provided with Parallax Protocol. That’s up to you. The resurgence of interest in sci-fi star system generation tools has opened our eyes to what was always there. Creating your milieu is one of the genre's greatest joys. Some of our favorite star system generation tools are listed in Appendix G.
We think of this game as a logical companion to Lampblack & Brimstone’s Perilous Void. That fantastic supplement identifies itself as a toolbox “for collaborative approaches to setting creation for a sci-fi campaign.” Parallax Protocol is a tool rack for those tools to rest on.
Parallax Protocol also accounts for the use of compatible fictional universes to save you time and to keep your players laser-focused. A list of easily compatible settings is detailed in Appendix F.
Parallax Protocol is a complete, playable game that is currently in playtesting. It has not been fully edited, and will receive updates and rule changes as playtesting completes. We welcome and encourage feedback if you play the game.
When complete, a print version will be available. The PDF will always be free.
Some of the game's goals are:
- A well defined design space that allows referees to devise additional technology, weaponry, sentient alien attributes, and sub-sapient alien monstrosities.
- System extensions and subsystems should be easy to create.
- An open invitation to publish any such compatible creations.
As such, a compatibility license and compatibility logos will be available.
